The Sinking City 2 Combat and Weapons Guide
Shoot smart, finish with melee, and never waste a bullet in Arkham.
Combat in The Sinking City 2 is deliberate. Frogwares rebuilt gunplay for survival horror: limited magazines, visible wound layers on enemies, and a rhythm of aim → stagger weak point → melee execute that conserves ammunition. This guide explains how to fight efficiently in the demo and what to expect when the full arsenal unlocks on launch day.
Core combat loop
Every firearm encounter should follow this pattern unless you are fleeing:
- Identify the weak point — glowing pustules, exposed muscle bundles, or joint targets appear during wind-up animations.
- Stagger with focused shots — body shots deal damage but rarely interrupt attacks. Weak-point hits cause a flinch state.
- Melee execute — close distance and press the melee button to finish the enemy without spending extra rounds.
- Reload behind cover — never reload in the open when a second enemy patrols nearby.
Dodge (Space on PC, B on Xbox controller) grants brief invulnerability frames. Use it to escape grab attacks from Slither-touched corpses or lunging Deep Ones.
Weapon categories in the 1920s arsenal
Frogwares emphasizes period-authentic firearms:
- Handguns — balanced ammo economy; best for precise weak-point shots.
- Shotguns — high stagger at close range; expensive ammo; ideal for tight corridors.
- SMGs — appear in pre-order bonus packs like the Chthonic Arsenal; sustained fire at the cost of rare ammo types.
- Revolvers — premium sidearms such as the “Bucking Bronco” from the Holloway Manor mission in the Premium Edition.
Attachments from story missions (barrels, grips, recipes) modify recoil and damage. Store unused weapons in the stash until a mission calls for a specific type.
Enemy-specific tactics
Slither (reanimated dead)
Slow individually but dangerous in groups. Headshots are less reliable than limb weak points. Kite backward, stagger one corpse, melee finish, then reposition before others surround you.
Deep Ones
Emerge from water with burst speed. Listen for splashes before crossing flooded plazas. Shotguns or point-blank handgun bursts stagger them faster than rifles at range.
Shadow anomalies
Distort space and test nerves more than HP pools. Retreat to lit areas when possible. Some encounters are designed to be survived rather than cleared — see Enemies for behavioral notes.
Perks and Dream Essence
Safe rooms let you equip a limited number of talents purchased with Dream Essence. Combat-focused perks mentioned in previews include:
- Bonus damage after a kill
- Reduced damage taken after a successful dodge
- Increased crafting yield for ammunition
- Faster reload speeds
Because slots are restricted, specialize per district: bring reload perks to ammo-starved hospital wings, or dodge perks for multi-enemy arenas.
Boss and arena philosophy
The demo does not include a traditional boss, but arena fights teach the same rules: clear adds with melee finishers, conserve shotgun shells for elite variants, and save healing for the final wave. Full-game bosses will likely gate districts — we will expand this section after August 18.
Pre-order weapons vs in-game finds
The Chthonic Arsenal pre-order pack adds cosmetic and early-access guns (Shale Mary handgun, Breakwater shotgun, Tektite Tommy SMG). They are strong but not required — skillful weak-point play beats raw DPS. Compare editions in Editions Comparison.
Practice routes
Replay the demo’s first combat encounter until you can kill the initial monster using three bullets or fewer. Then run the floodgate section without healing items. Those drills translate directly to launch-week difficulty spikes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I stealth past enemies?
The demo focuses on direct encounters. Limited avoidance is possible by routing around patrols, but core progression expects combat literacy.
Is there a cover system?
There is no dedicated cover button. Use environmental corners manually and dodge for defense.
Do headshots matter?
Weak-point targeting matters more than generic headshots. Enemies expose different vulnerable zones per attack phase.
